This time of year always brings me a feeling of anticipation. I call it the new pencil box feeling. Kids today don't use pencil boxes, but when I was child going back to school meant getting a new pencil box. But the pencil box was just a symbol for a new start. To me the new year starts the first day of school not January 1st. Even at my age there is just something about seeing the school buses and the kids with their pack backs (today's equivalent of my pencil box) that makes my heart beat a little faster. Maybe that is why I like to travel in the fall. I may not be climbing on a yellow school bus but I can board an airplane or a ship or a tour bus and begin a learning journey.
Every one's life is a journey. You know that saying "Life is a Journey not a Destination." Too often we put things off by saying when I reach this goal or that goal, I can start to enjoy life. Well, life doesn't wait and before you know it is over. So enjoy every day as it comes. Yes, plan for the future. Some of my favorite things are planning a new painting or a new trip or a family dinner. Planning can be as much fun as the actual event. But while you are planning don't forget the present, be in the moment. Be open to what the day will bring. Get excited. This morning as I was waiting for the coffee to brew, I looked out the window and saw a pair of blue jays and a pair of cardinals fly into our crap apple tree. They were a beautiful burst of color against the dull dried out landscape. It made my heart sing and I shared it with my husband so we both started the day with a warm feeling. Maybe they were my new pencil box.
I have named my blog Serendipity because throughout my life I have encountered so many serendipitous moments that have given me great joy or insight.
